Vernal Pool Adventure

Expert naturalist Peter Trull will lead this vernal pool adventure, sponsored by Harwich Conservation Trust. You'll learn about the nocturnal natural history of these intriguing habitats and the curious creatures who live there. Discover how amphibians emerge from winter hibernation during the rainy nights after the March full moon. Listen for—and maybe see!—spring peepers, wood frogs, and perhaps pickerel frogs calling in a vernal pool and woodland. This nighttime program may even give you the chance to see a spring phenomenon rarely witnessed by humans: the emergence, mating, and egg-laying of spotted salamanders. Search with headlamps, dip nets, and flashlights for the salamanders and their jelly-like egg masses as you're surrounded by the sounds of nature on a spring evening. Wear boots and bring a flashlight, and if it's raining, dress accordingly. Directions will be emailed to you after you register (and pay) online at www.HarwichConservationTrust.org.
